Network cable assemblies are used in the transmission of data across networks. They use many different technologies. Choices include: Fibre Channel, IEEE 1394, general-purpose interface bus (GPIB), parallel, and patch. Fibre channel is a high-speed, serial data transfer architecture that uses links of twisted-pair, coaxial, or fiber optic cable. Small computer system interface (SCSI) devices can use fibre channel arbitrated loop (FC-AL), the most popular fibre channel typology. IEEE 1394 or FireWire® (Apple Computer, Inc.) is an interface standard adopted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for very fast digital data transfers such as streaming video. GPIB cables are designed to connect computers, peripherals and laboratory instruments so that data and control information can pass between them. Parallel cables are used to simultaneously transmit multiple bits of data over separate lines (e.g., eight bits over eight lines). Network cable assemblies with patch cables are terminated at both ends.

Network cable assemblies use many different serial, SCSI, universal serial bus (USB), and Ethernet technologies. RS232, RS422, and RS485 are common serial standards. There are two main USB technologies. The original standard, USB 1.1 supports data transfer rates of up to 12 Mbps. The current standard, USB 2.0, is faster and supports data transfer rates of up to 480 Mbps. Suppliers specify many different SCSI standards for network cable assemblies. Choices include: SCSI-1, SCSI-2, and SCSI-3; Fast SCSI, Wide SCSI, and Fast Wide SCSI; Ultra SCSI, Ultra2 SCSI, and Ultra3 SCSI; Ultra 320 SCSI and Ultra 640 SCSI; Wide Ultra SCSI and Wide Ultra 2 SCSI; Fibre Channel and Serial SCSI. Ethernet is a local area network (LAN) protocol that uses a bus or star topology and supports data transfer rates of 10 Mbps. Common Ethernet types include: 10-Base T, 10Base-2, 10Base-FL, 100Base-TX, 100Base-FX, 1000Base-T, 1000Base-LX, and 1000Base-SX.

Products & Services Related to Network Cable Assemblies
Cable Assemblies
Cable assemblies are collections of wires or cables banded into a single unit with connectors on at least one end.
Coaxial Cables and Triaxial Cables
Coaxial cables have one conductor insulated with a dielectric material and then surrounded by the other conductor, usually referred to as the center conductor and shield.  Triaxial cables are specialized coaxial cables.
Flat Cables
Flat cables are typically used in computers for internal connections to peripherals. They are also referred to as ribbon cables.
Industrial Network Cables
Industrial network cables are used in industrial applications such as automation, control and data acquisition.
Multiconductor Cables
Multiconductor cables contain two or more conductors, each of which consists of a single wire or combination of wires. Cable shielding is placed around an insulated conductor or group of conductors to prevent electrostatic or electromagnetic interference between the enclosed wires and external fields.
Serial Cable Assemblies
Serial cable assemblies are used for the serial transmission of data. They support communication standards such as RS232, RS422, and RS485, as well as Fibre Channel, FireWire or IEEE 1394, USB 1.1, and USB 2.0.
Video Cable Assemblies
Video cable assemblies are used for the transmission of video signals, including monochrome, composite and component color video signals.
