SCSI converters are conversion devices used between different types of SCSI interfaces such as single-ended (SE) to high-voltage differential (HVD), or HVD to low-voltage differential (LVD). Small computer system interface (SCSI) has been used for many years in computer design to attach peripheral devices such as scanners and drives.
SCSI converters allow for conversion between different SCSI interface devices. Different SCSI converters are also used to add HVD devices to systems that use LVD SCSI interfaces, or the reverse, adding LVD or SE devices to HVD interfaces. A SCSI expander may also function as a SCSI converter, allowing single ended systems to be expanded into differential systems. This enables the SCSI devices to be located at a distance from the computer system, increasing the number and type of devices that can be added to the system.

SCSI converters can be internal or external components. An external SCSI adapter is located outside of the computer itself and may be used to change a female configuration to a male configuration, or vice versa. Other SCSI converters include a SCSI to USB converter, a SCSI to IDE converter, and a SCSI to SATA converter. A SCSI to USB converter is an adapter cable with a SCSI connector on one end and a USB connector on the other. USB is an acronym for universal serial bus. Typically, SCSI to USB converters are used to connect a PC device to a Macintosh computer. A SCSI to IDE converter is often a converter card that is installed internally to the disk drive to convert an IDE drive to a SCSI drive. A SCSI to SATA converter or bridge serves a similar purpose, converting a SATA drive to a SCSI drive. SCSI to IDE converters and SCSI to SATA converters are often used to convert inexpensive IDE and SATA drives to expand SCSI storage capability.
