PMC Modules

PMC modules include a wide range of peripherals that are designed to function with in conjunction with PCI mezzanine cards (PMC).  The main types of PMC modules are bus interfaces and adapter modules, memory modules, mass storage modules, networking modules, serial communication modules, and other devices such as T1/E1 controllers, I/O modules, and data acquisition cards.

Bus interfaces or adapter modules are computer boards that translate the data from the PMC bus to another bus and vice versa. They are used to connect two incompatible buses.  Memory modules are boards that contain memory chips.  Mass storage modules are used for data storage.  This classification includes PMC modules such as hard drives and CD-ROMs.  Networking modules are boards that serve as network adapters, such as Ethernet, Token Rings, etc.  Serial communication modules are serial cards that provide one or more serial ports to a host computer. The card interfaces the host with a PMC bus and adds RS232 / RS422 or other types of serial ports.

PMC (PCI Mezzanine Card) is a low profile mezzanine card for computer systems with logical and electrical layers based on the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) specifications. The PMC bus is actually a form factor that is electrically the same as the PCI Bus, but the shape of the card and the bus connectors are different. Designed for rugged implementations, PMC and PMC modules are defined in IEEE P1386.1 and are based in the Common Mezzanine Card (CMC) mechanical specifications. The basic PMC module is a 32-bit data bus that uses two 64-pin connectors from the PCI bus. There is also a 64-bit version that uses three 64-pin connectors PCI.
