Joystick Technology

   Joystick Technology:
   Your choices are...

   Inductive

A noncontact technology.  The inductive joystick has a magnetic coil connected to the bottom of the grip shaft, directly over four other magnetic coils mounted on a circuit board in the base. The shaft is fitted with an omni-directional spring, allowing for self-centering. Deflection of the shaft moves the shaft mounted magnetic coil over the four stationary coils causing a change in the magnetic waveform patterns. The change in waveform is interpolated by a microprocessor on the circuit board and output as a change in voltage.

   Resistive

Resistive joysticks use potentiometers mounted to spring loaded bails that are moved by a deflection of the joystick handle. Typically one potentiometer is used for each axis (x and y). The outputs of the pots are read as either a change in voltage or a change in electrical resistance depending on how they are wired.

   Hybrid

The hybrid design is a combination of both inductive and resistive technologies. Convergence of the two joystick designs offers three axis (x, y and z) configurations where the z-axis is controlled by a rotation of the handle. The handle utilizes a spring and bail mechanism, which incorporates a potentiometer.

   Optical

A noncontact photoelectronic switch used instead of conventional contacting switches or potentiometers.

   Microswitches

Microswitches are small switches that have a button that, when pressed, closes the switch.

   Hall Effect

A noncontact technology type.  When the input current is held constant, as in the joystick application, the Hall voltage is directly proportional to the perpendicular component of magnetic field.  If the magnets change position, the voltage changes and can be interpreted as joystick movement.

   Other Input Technology

Other unlisted or proprietary input technology.

Search Logic:      All products with ANY of the selected attributes will be returned as matches. Leaving all boxes unchecked will not limit the search criteria for this question; products with all attribute options will be returned as matches.
Connector / Protocol Support

   Connector / Protocol Support
   Your choices are...

   DB-15

Also known as a game port connector.  A legacy connector that is present on many sound cards, with the exception of some of the newer ones. It is used for connecting a joystick or other gaming device to the system.

   USB

Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a specification developed by Compaq, Digital, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NEC and Northern Telecom.  It is the latest generation of serial bus technology that can transfer data at up to 12 Megabits/second can be daisy chained (with up to 127 devices on a single port) and can provide power from the computer's power supply to peripherals (so that peripherals do not need their own AC power).

   RS232

Interface between data terminal equipment and data communications equipment employing serial binary data interchange. Serial refers to the fact that the data is transferred one bit at a time.

   CANbus

A protocol developed by automobile manufacturers enabling a vehicle's on-board computer diagnostic system to output standardized data streams

   Profibus

Vendor-independent open fieldbus standard for use in manufacturing and building automation as well as process control. Utilizes a non-powered two-wire (RS485) network. PROFIBUS is standardized under the European Fieldbus Standard EN 50 170. Includes 3 versions - FMS, DP and PA.

   PWM

Pulse width modulation.  A switch-mode control method used in amplifiers and drivers to control voltage and current to obtain higher efficiency than linear control. PWM refers to variable on/off times (or width) of the voltage pulses applied to the transistors.

   None

The joystick has no connector or protocol support.

   Other

Other unlisted or specialized protocol support.
