   Memory Card
 
     Memory and storage cards are devices used to add memory (RAM, SRAM, Flash, etc.) and/or storage capacity (hard disks, CD-ROM, etc.) to computers.
 
   Hard Drive Card
 
     Hard Drive cards are devices used to add storage capacity to computers. PCMCIA Hard Drive Cards provide high storage capacity to notebooks, palmtop, personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile systems, and PCMCIA equipped computers.
 
   Serial Adapter Card
 
     A serial PC Card provides one or more serial ports to a host computer. The card interfaces the host with a PCMCIA card bus and adds RS232/RS422 or other types of serial ports.
 
   Networking Card
 
     A PCMCIA Networking card is an interface board that allows a host computer to connect to a network for data transmission and communication. Networking adapters include, among others, modem, fax, LAN (Ethernet, Token Ring, ISDN, etc.), and wireless LAN cards.
 
   Modem / Fax Card
 
     A PCMCIA Modem/Fax card enables a computer to transmit data over the telephone lines. Because computer information is digital data and information transmitted over the telephone lines is transmitted in analog waves, a modem converts between these two forms.
 
   Card Reader/Writer
 
     Card Readers/Writers are modules that allow the user to transfer data from/to a host computer to/from a PCMCIA card. The Reader/Writer, also known as card driver, is a PCMCIA carrier that connects to the host computer through a port or bus.  These modules simplify the task of transporting and sharing files among digital cameras, PDAs, notebooks, and desktop PCs.
 
   Bus Interface / Adapter / Controller
 
     An interface is a computer board that translates the data from the PCMCIA bus to another bus and vice versa. It is used to connect two non-compatible buses.

   PC Card Standard 95
 
     This is the original PC Card with 16 bits of address and data. It has a 68-pin interface.
 
   CardBus Technology
 
     PC Card with 32 bits of address and data. Runs at 33 MHz.
 
   Miniature Card Technology
 
     They are about one-fourth the size of the standard 95 PC Card. They were designed by Intel® StrataFlash technology (a multilevel-cell technology), and µBGA (Ball Grid Array). These two technologies create a high-capacity flash card. Miniature cards have 60-pin connectors, and dimensions of 38mm x 33mm x 3.5mm (73% smaller than a full PC Card).
 
   CompactFlash™ and CF+™ Standard
 
     CompactFlash™ is a very small removable mass storage PC Card. SanDisk Corporation introduced it in 1994.  CF™ cards weigh a half-ounce and are the size of a matchbook, with a thickness that is less than one-half of a current PCMCIA Type II card. It is actually one-fourth the volume of a PCMCIA card. Instead of the 68 pins in PC Card Standard 95, a CF card has 50 pins but still conforms to PCMCIA ATA specs. It can be easily slipped into a passive 68-pin Type II adapter card that fully meets PCMCIA electrical and mechanical interface specifications. The CF+ specification adds additional card functionality over the original CompactFlash card including magnetic disk drive data storage and I/O cards such as Ethernet, serial, fax/modem, digital phone card, USB, barcode scanner, etc. These cards use flash technology, which is a non-volatile storage solution that does not require a battery to retain data indefinitely.
 
   Other

  • SmartMedia: It is about one-third the area of a conventional PC Card. The card dimensions are 45.0mm x 37.0mm x 0.76mm.
  • CardBay: New technology that incorporates USB features to the PC Card.

   Type I Card
 
     Type I card dimensions are 54mm x 85.4mm and can be up to 3.3 mm thick. These cards are normally used as memory cards (RAM, ROM, Flash RAM, etc.).
 
   Type II Card
 
     Type II card dimensions are 54mm x 85.4mm and can be up to 5.5 mm thick. Common uses of these cards: I/O devices such as data/fax modems, LAN adapter, non-rotating mass storage devices, etc.
 
   Type III Card
 
     Type III card dimensions are 54mm x 85.4mm and can be up to 10.5 mm thick. These cards are commonly used as hard drives.
 
   Type IV Card
 
     Type IV card have not yet been ratified by the PCMCIA consortium. The exact size is expected to be 54mm x 85.4mm and a thickness of 18 mm. Common uses of these cards: large capacity hard drives.
 
   Other
 
     Other, not listed, form factors, such as

  • SmartMedia Card (45mm x 37mm x 0.76mm)
  • CompactFlash (43mm x 36mm x 3.3mm)
  • Miniature Card (38mm x 3.5mm x3.5mm)
  • Solid State Floppy Disk® (SSFDC®). It is the thinnest and one of the smallest form factor cards (about one-third the size of a credit card)
  • MultiMediaCard (MMC). It is approximately the size of a postage stamp.
